â¦â¦â¦
âGoddess, be with you reverend and you Anna on this happy day!â A young girl manning the doors to the church pipped up happily, spotting the two approaching. Donovan smiled kindly at the girl, and the woman thanked her as they entered the church, which had been prepared for a wedding. Donovan and his bride Anna gazed happily at the pews filled with their friends and family who had come to see them profess their love for each other in the house of the Goddess Frey where they had first met. The day had finally come for them to be wed neither knowing a time in life when they were happier.
The ceremony was lovely and not overly long the couple had insisted on this. After their vows had been said and their rings presented, the guests were told to gather behind the church, where a large feast had been set up. The party lasted well into the night and into the morning with food, drink, games, and music. Not everyone seemed to be happy about the occasion. The view shifted from the merry celebration over to the mayorâs house, where his wife was angrily raving about the union.
âUnacceptable! How will it look for our growing town? Our reverend wedding some low born elf! It makes me sick just thinking about it, Mores! Something must be done; I simply wonât stand for it!â She raged, pacing angrily by the fire as the mayor sipped at his brandy, working out how best to console his irate wife. Then an idea came to him.
âYou know, I am rather close now to officiating the first gathering. Many of the nearby lords and nobles have eagerly singed with payment well in advance. With the inn finally finished, itâs a perfect time.â He said, evenly studying the liquid in his crystal glass.
âWhat good is your stupid little menâs club to me, Mores! I have already told you I care not what you and the men do with those lowborn trash.â She stopped talking, pausing on that thought and giving her husband a wide smile. âOh, Mores! That is perfect! Yes, I quite agree. The lords have paid handsomely for their seat in the event why not offering something enticing?â
Mores nodded solemnly, not looking up from his glass. âMy thoughts exactly, my dear. We have plenty of little rabbits, so why not offer a white stag in the hunt? Not a commoner and not a noble, something right in between those two drastically different worlds. Just enough social standing to make it worth an additional fee, I shouldnât wonder.â He said with a greedy twinkle flashing in his eye.
âOh indeed, you could easily charge double the entrance fee for the chance at bagging this new prize. There will be a fuss after the event, of course, but nothing we wonât be able to cover.â
Morse nodded again, âquit, hence the additional fee should any snooping authorities need bribing. Iâve never known a man who loved law more than gold after all.
